Local BUS Service | FAQ
The famous Chicken Bus always begins its service directly from the Port of Moyogalpa with its prime destination hub in Altagracia almost every hour - with Monday to Saturday service.
From Altagracia - the bus service splits into two - with one bus headed east to Balgüe
and the other bus west towards Mérida and the San Ramon area.
What do I pay to get on the Bus?
Expect to pay C$20-C$40 to travel on the bus.
NOTE: Always look at what the locals are paying and you can follow along with that most times.
Also, pay with small bills as they don't like making change for large bills or $USD. If you are unsure - just ask before finding your seat.
If you have lots of bags, luggage, etc. you may
pay an additional fee dependent on the C$ collector on each bus.
Prices seem to fluctuate. Ask first before loading.

Service to Other Villages
These times are estimated - things around here work on Nica time of course & are dependent
on the number of stops on each bus.
The bus travels from the north to the south of the island.
After the hub in Altagracia each bus then services the eastern and western towns & villages of the Maderas Volcano.
There is a central point (Y) intersection at the top of the hill in Santa Cruz (past the beach area)
where the road splits where you can catch either bus on the way back to the Altagracia hub.
A well stocked pulperia and a few restaurants are there if you wish to stock up on supplies, pet food, liquor, food & water.
The Bus Experience | Best Advice
Riding the bus here is similar to most Central American countries. Its slow, bumpy and crowded - always!
Our advice is to get your seat early - put your bags opposite your seat so you can keep an eye on it.
The best seat is beside the window on the opposite side of the sun.
If you get an aisle seat - be prepared to rub elbows with everyone in the aisle!
If you have really big luggage or lots of bags - arrange them early at the back of the bus so you can get off at your stop much easier than disturbing everyone in the middle of the bus.
Key - get your seat early and stay in it!
As always; elders, mom's with small kids & disabled people get the priority for seating. Be respectful of this unwritten rule.
NOTE:
Generally avoid travel on Sundays as times & bus availability is extremely limited.
There is no bus service between Balgüe to San Ramon & Altagracia to San Marcos.
Many amazing conversations can be had with locals - or surprise them and pay for their fare from time to time.
The vendors that sell on the buses always have the best prices on delicious fruit drinks & water!
Can't find the bus stop? A Nica, will tell you!
